ARTIST STATEMENT

As a Korean American interdisciplinary artist, I explore the ephemeral nature of light to evoke emotion, capturing the delicate balance between clarity and ambiguity. Through blurred and faded imagery, often layered with Korean symbols and objects, my work creates contemplative spaces where memory, identity, and perception subtly intertwine.

Growing up in Korea, identity was an unspoken certainty, reflected in the familiarity of those around me. It was only after moving to the United States that I began to see identity as something more fluid and complex, shaped not only by personal experience but also by the perceptions of others. Navigating both belonging and alienation, as well as the quiet weight of stereotypes as an Asian woman, I became more aware of the spaces in between—where identity shifts, overlaps, and evolves in ways that are often difficult to grasp.

This sense of ambiguity extends into my creative process. I embrace uncertainty through oil painting, Korean painting, textile art, and metalwork, allowing emotions and experiences to unfold organically. Rather than seeking resolution, my work offers a space of stillness, where the undefined can be felt. I hope to create a visual language that resonates with those lingering between worlds, inviting them into a moment of introspection, connection, and gentle understanding.
